I've dripped with both cotton and rayon. Recently I did some comparing between the two, using the same dripper and coils. Here are my thoughts:
    1. Rayon wicks last longer than cotton wicks
    2. Cotton wicks taste better than rayon wicks (vape flavor)
    3. Rayon hold more juice than cotton
    4. Cotton is easier to use than rayon
    5. Rayon scares me - it's not natural
    6. Cotton scares me - it can easily catch fire
    7. I don't care if it's cotton or rayon, I hate changing wicks.
    8. I really hate silica!
    Any comments? Suggestions? Thoughts?

You have summed up quite a bit :)

    1: Agree
2: For me that depends, I usually find rayon more crisp and defined on flavour, but I can't say the difference is that big for me.
3: Agree, but I have found that rayon more like to transport the juice than holding, so I trim rayon a lot more than cotton to get it to were it should be, the coil.
Did this statement make any sense to anyone else I wonder.
4 . I find rayon easier in use, but again the difference is marginal.

7: RDA's no problem, RBA more of a bore yes.
8: Using silica is like a dark and forbidden art, like worshipping untold horrors a dark and rainy night !

Another thing is o-rings. I would have liked to have a long personal chat with those persons that found it to be a good idea to put in those things, especially with replacements at a going rate of 1 gold bar pr. ring, and that is if you are able to find it all.

With some atomizers coming out it would help to be a hair stylist when preparing the wicking.

I haven't really compared them. I have Rayon, Japanese cotton & Organic at home, I'm not really bothered which one I use at the moment because I have way too much of all of them.

    • Also agree
    • Personally do not agree. I can often taste cotton, even organic, non-chemical treated but I cant really taste rayon at all. To me it is more transparent and let's juices jump out more than cotton which can comparatively mute some juice flavors
    • Interesting observation! I hadn't compared how much they can hold side by side. Good to know.
    • Generally agreed as you have to pay more attention to rayon density in the coil and also think about the tails more than you do with cotton.
    • Rayon is completely natural cellulose. The process uses chemicals but there are none at all retained after production. You can read about it yourself. It's certified as such in different places. Check out the big rayon thread at ECF if you want to check out references to its safety. Your concerns have been brought up there many times by others and no evidence whatsoever that it is any worse than cotton. In fact, it's probably better as many cotton varieties may contain trace pesticides and other things and it's easier to char and burn than rayon.
    • In fact, it is less easy to burn. It has a higher temp burn point than cotton.
    • Mostly agreed but sometimes I like doing it. :)
    • Agreed!
    **Updated**
In my experiences using both, rayon does transport juice better but sometimes juice can pool in large tails. So, oftentimes it's advisable to trim down the tails up to 50% or so...amount really depends on the atty, deck, juice flow, etc. Yes, makes sense to me. I almost always trim down rayon tails.

Is it a big enough taste difference that you would switch to rayon in your RDA's?

I'll bring some on Saturday, you can try it out. Same with most things vape related, just personal preference.

Just mostly curiosity, I am ok with my cotton and have plenty, I just was wondering if he thought it was that big of a taste difference. But I'll definitely give your Rayon a test :)
I thought Rayon was supposed to be better about dry hits although I don't get dry hits too often by just not letting the wick get dry.

I like my 7-11 cotton it lasts forever and it doesn't taste like anything except when I burn it, then it tastes like burnt 7-11 cotton

I use it exclusively in all rebuildable devices. For me it's that much better. As for taste, I especially taste the cotton for a while in the beginning and then it fades away to basically nothing. The thing I noticed repeatedly is that side by side same attys, same juice and same type of coils, the juice flavor with rayon was more pronounced while the cotton was muted in comparison. Just my experience...could have been the juices too that lent themselves better to rayon use.

I recently spent 2 weeks exclusively with Jap cotton and I have mix feelings. The vape feels smoother which I like but it does not seems to hold the juice or wick as efficiently as rayon.

Standard cotton is great because available everywhere, anytime so I consider it as a backup option. It still does a good job though.

If I run out of Fiber Freaks or Rayon, I'll wick with Jap cotton without complaining, it's still a great wicking material. But having the choice, Fiber Freaks is far up ahead IMO.

    I'll rank as :

    1. Fiber Freaks
    2. Rayon
    3. Japanese Cotton
    4. Cotton
