1. Welcome to Thailand Vapers, an English language forum for members in Thailand and the rest of Asia to talk about vaping.
Commonly referred to as e-cigarettes, vaping is really about the use of personal vaporizers (mods) and atomizers (tanks, clearos, RBAs, RDAs, RTAs) filled with e-liquid.

what are the advantages of the VTC5? I can get them locally.

Higher C rate, lower ESR ???

The advantages of the Sony are the 30amp continuous and 60amp peak discharge. The Sony is one of the favorites of sub-ohmers because if you make a mistake with your Ohm's law calculations--or other boo boos happen--the Sony will be able to handle the discharge whereas other batteries will explode turning your mod into a pipe bomb. If you notice on my picture above, all the green batteries are Sony. There's a reason I buy them.

The VTC4 has the same amp discharge as the VTC5, but the VTC5 has 500 more mAh, meaning it will last longer.

Another battery that is popular is the Effest "purple" battery (pictured secord row, third in from the right), which is claimed to have a 35amp discharge with2500 mAh. I have the battery, and I can attest from personal knowledge that they are friggin' liars. I get more battery life out of the older VTC4s which are rated 400 mAh less. The difference is that Sony is accurate in their representations.

I was feeling the same about my Efest purples. Never could be certain but after seeing your thoughts I suspect it's indeed the case. Still, seems to be a solid battery despite what looks to be an inaccurate mAh rating.

Yeah, Scratchy, I agree and should clarify. I do think the Effest purple IS a solid battery. In general, I am happy with it, and trust it enough to use it in regular rotation on my mechanicals with sub ohm atty's. I bought it to see what the hype was about, and when these came out they were constantly out of stock because sub-ohmers were buyign these batteries. After I got it and used it, I just don't think it is better than the Sony's. Hence I only have one in my collection (I ended up just buying more Sony's). In the end, I could buy the Sony's (VTC4 or VTC5) for less than the price of the Effest. So I bought the Sony's.

    EDIT:
Uhhh...I just saw this on the Vaporjoes website: Vapor Joes - Daily Vaping Deals: FOUND: SONY 30AMP BATTERIES - 3 FOR $24.99

Quoting the article: "Its official. Sony is no longer making the 30AMP line of batteries."

Better buy them up while you have the chance.

Agree, VTC5's are super-good and so too the VTC4 albeit with lower mAh. Just did a count and I have 12 VTC5 and 2 VTC4 batteries so should be good for a while. I thought I had fewer VTC 5 but with most in devices only about half appear at any one time.

Wonder if Sony's going to come out with a new line. I mean the VTC5 has been hugely popular and lots of high regard from consumers so it would be good for them to build upon that and keep momentum.

    Thanks for those links!!!

WARNING on that Vaporjoes link....they are VTC3 batteries. Web page title reads VTC4 but product description reads VTC3 and looking at specs they appear to be VTC3 (1600 mAh).

Has anyone ever tried putting 2 batteries in series and running 7.4 volts , provided your insulators can handle it ?

Some people do it, and some mods are designed for it. It isn't recommended because the batteries get stressed more, the current from one battery has to travel through another battery to get to your coil. I wouldn't do it personally, I just don't see a benefit, at least not for vaping. Parallel makes more sense to me.

From what I've read this isn't true.
Sony Is *Not* Discontinuing the VTC Line of Batteries : electronic_cigarette

Its kind of absurd to even speculate that they would discontinue a line like this so fast. It takes a MASSIVE investment to open a single product line in the Li-Ion game, its way more likely they aren't available because they are in such high demand. I would estimate that the e-cig industry uses around .00001% of Sony's production of VTC batteries. The majority of them go into stuff like laptops and hybrid batteries, and the companies that order these batteries require their continued production for replacement purposes. Just look at what Tesla alone consumes:
Will Tesla Alone Double Global Demand For Its Battery Cells?

Here's a quote from that article to put things into perspective:
I've heard the VTC6 mentioned already at 3100mAh, estimated by the end of the year. As for popularity and high regard, the vaping industry is so inconsequential to the battery industry that honestly I consider us pretty lucky to be able to get them at all without having to rip open some other device.

Had no idea the 18650 format was used in the thousands for each Tesla. Wow. See now they also use LiMn type as well.

Think though that you are underestimating the ecig inductry impact on Sony VTC sales....even if you took all 660 million cylindrical cells produced worldwide and say that that VTC series by Sony represent 1/4 that (I am sure that's not the case) and they sold a modest 300,000 VTC batteries that ultimately went to the vaping industry, that would put it at a staggering .18%, much more than your estimate.

Good to hear that there may be a VTC6 coming. 3100 mAh would be great!
