I hope you will find some help, since i think it's cheaper, and easier to only get the wire and then unlinited coils.. Any special coils you want to do?

No mate, nothing special. I ahve been rebuilding for drippers and now sub ohm tanks for more than 2 years. C an't beat the flavour from your own coils, But for me the improvement in performance has to out weigh the time taken and in some cases wasted wire (staggered clap tons for example) that comers with the build. I'm going to start dabbling again with more builds but only slowly.I have all the wire I need, 22g to 32g so enough to be getting on with. lol

Well staggered most ppl use 2 wraps and then remove one and it is waste.. I found a way arround that, all thats wasted is a 10-15cm .. I will post pictures and try and make a smal video how i space it

Only if you have time mate. I'm not jumping in to building any time soon in a big way.

As someone who has seen your coil porn posts with great admiration, I certainly feel I could learn a lot. I've just started making my own twisted pair coils, which are relatively easy to pull off without the need for special purchases. I'm currently in the process of trying to essentially create a wire/coil bible by collecting all of the information starting with the different types of wire available, the particular attributes, what it should and should not be used for, etc. But truthfully, this is where I'm at. I'm still getting a grasp of the difference between 316L vs 304, Ni vs Ti, Ohms vs Volts vs Watts, and how each affects the vaping experience, safety, dangers, etc... Any chance you could perhaps run a 101 course for us wannabe coilers on the fundamentals?

Very Nice! I am with you on this.:grin:
Really great idea. We can share our experiences, tips, and tricks.
I learn new things everyday, and learn things on this forum. That tip for the Claptons worked great , thanks.

A great tip I know we both use is...

Straightening out your wire, this will make building a lot easier, also wrapping.

To straighten out your wire with drill :

Insert your desired length /gauge wire and put one end into a drill, (by either making and L at the end, making a loop, or twisting the ends together so the drill can can hold it in place when you tighten it) hold the other end with pliers and spin counter clock wise until straighten.

To Straighten out your wire with out a drill :

Take your desired length / gauge wire. Wrap one end making a loop around the middle wedge in a small screw driver and twist it very tight. Take the other and hold in pliers. Hold the screw driver in your dominant hand's palm vertically. (a gesture somewhat similar to a fist) with the wire resting in between your middle and third finger and rotate the screwdriver in your hand counterclockwise until your wire is straighten. You want to hold the pliers and screw driver far apart and very tight as you spin.

Do you mean twisting the wires there @Loki ?

Thank you longtail. I was trying to make two different, separate posts, ( How to straighten wire with drill no drill. How to twist with drill or no drill) I uploaded the opposite pics and instructions on the no drill segment.

    Thank you

On the Ohms and Volts/Watts part im no good, i ask the Masters in here, and some of the SS i know, Ni and Ti not so much, i havnt been playing with that yet... But making coils thats just fun...

It's quite a bit easier now tbh. I learnt coiling on a Mech where you had to change the coil type/size/ohms AND gauge to get the required temp for a juice as well as the vapor you wanted. All this taking in to account tghat you had a set 4.2V absolute max, at least in a tube mod, but you needed to set the combination for about 3.7-3.8 V as that was the optimal Voltage of your battery. I also hate long ramp ups, so I had to take thatg in to account as well. Much easier now with the big VW mods and TC as well.

I sound like an old man. lol When I was a nipper….. LMAO

Thats what i NEED to learn now, i have 2 months on me, i need to figure out what i need to use on my mech with Twisted Messes RDA2 to get a good varm vape without killing my batteries to fast on some crappy rampup...

    @a_spirit Pm sent mate.
    **Updated**
Alright then, the following is what I persoanlly have found from basically 18 months of drippping on mechs regarding the coils and how they effect flavour and ramp up time as well as drain on the battery. This is only applicable to me and I am sure others will ahve more to add or a different take on this to me. If you do please add to the thread I always like to get more information to try out. This is all fairly simple stuf that might be useful as a start point for your own experimentation.

Right so what effects the flavour and vapor from a coil and also the ramp up time.

Easiest first, ramp up time. As we are talking about Mechs specifically here there are really only a few things that effect that. State of your battery charge, the metal mass of the coil.

Obviously a fresh battery will push out a theoretical 4.2V and decrease, as it gets used, to the optimum charge of 3.7V and lower. So the hgher the volt's the faster the ramp up time. Told you it was simple stuff here. lol

Metal mass refers to the actual amount of metal in your coil you are trying to heat up and so the thicker the gauge the higher the mass. e.g. a 6 wrap 22g is a lot bigger than a 6 wrap 36g. Same as a 6 wrap 22g has more mass than a 4 wrap 22g. Also effecting the metal mass is the ID of the coil, bigger the ID the more mass to the coil. So simply the more metal in the coil the longer the ramp up time.

Also the ohms has an effect. Using the same gauge of kanthal the higher the ohms, the more metal mass and so the longer the ramp up.

Just to clarify I feel that ramp up time effects flavour when you have an extended ramp up. I believe this because by the time you have finished drawing on the atty you may well have not had enough time to heat the coils to the optimum temperature for the juice. This can be countered by a longer still heat up time before you draw on the atty

Flavour of the particular juice you are using may be set off by different temperatures of the coil, as we are seeing more and more with the use of TC mods. It can also taste very different between types of coil as well. Micro, parallel Claptons, etc. Airflow can also play a big part in the flavour. Flavour can be adjusted by the coil by changing the ohms or mass of your coil to get a different temperature of vapor or by changinf the type of coil.

Ther amount of vapor is dictated mainly by surface/contact area and temperature. Now if you are purely cloud chasing you want something with a big surface area, 18-20g works a treat, and high temperature. So you are looking at super sub-ohm, not recomended for inexperienced vapers, to keep the mass of the coil down. This will of course give you a long ramp up due to the metal mass. I never went more than a 0.05 20g macro coil personally, and then only one build, as it was way too hot for me. I really can't cloud chase for that reason. Another thing to remember is that the more the mass of metal being heated then the more heat you get in to your vapor.

So how does all this combine together?

First decide what you want from your vape. Do you want clouds, flavour, hot, cool or a middle ground.

If you want clouds it's going to be a hot vape so massive airflow is needed. This reduces the temperature as the vapor passes from the coils to the mouth. Also the more airflow the more vapor produced, generally speaking. Sub ohm coils of a thick gauge for surface area with the air holes dierctly on to the coils.

Flavour I would look around the 0.4r and up. Largest gauge you can use while still keeping the ramp up time down. the higher ohms will keep the wattage down and reduce the temperature and amount of vapor. lower airflow required at this level so not diluting the vapor too much and so keeping the flavour concentration there.

I went for a more middle of the road solution, around the 0.2 ohms mark slightly higher airflow, as that's what I prefer, and still plenty of flavour.

I rarely used anyhting more complicated than a parallel build on a mech, this was actually my preferred coil, because of the ramp up times. i find a parallel coil heats quicker, as the coils heat up they help each other got hot faster by 2 coils being in contact.

so there are the basics. i have knocked this out a bit quickly and so if there are any errors i apologise, and i hope it is ckear enough to make some kind of sense.

And please don't forget single coil set ups. These can produce great results with thicker gauge but higher ohms. Also a huge increase in battery life.
