Yes, maybe more referendums on EU exit. But Northern Ireland and Scotland might have referendums to leave the UK – staying in the EU at the end…

Total shock for me this morning
I was so sure I'd wake up to a stay vote, only to see a leave vote.
I just left one country hoping for a better life for my kids now this happens...
What a mess the UK will be in for many years after this leave vote,....

In the worst case it might mean the end of the UK as we know it.

I actually think that's a very good possibility given the way Scotland and Ireland (both halves) voted.

Please excuse my ignorance as I am from the US and have 0 understanding about politics in Europe. Is Great Britain officially out of the EU now? I wouldn't expect it to be instant but with the vote going to leaving the EU, what happens next? Time frame?

Asa well looking at demographics of those who voted pro-exit, it is scary for the remaining part, England.

As far I can see only England and Wales want to be out.

So first there will be a referendum again, I guess, for Scotland and Northern Ireland if they want to stay in.

In October there will be new elections for a new Prime Minister and he/she is going to take the lead of the exit strategy.

So the entire UK does not have to follow each other? I have done some research on Google and I am more confused than I was to start with. Looks like it will be at least a 2 year process. I don't know if congratulations or condolences are in order. I guess it's who you ask.

Yep 2 year minimum from the parliament introducing article 50, which is the out of EU article, which won't be done by Cameron, so it's a wait till at least October/November when he leaves as PM
Then it's up to the new PM to set the article 50 into motion....

It's just a mess right now

I think it is a big condolences that the European Union and the ministers are not listening to their people what they are afraid of in their countries.

Lotta, There are certain separation movements in Northern Ireland and even more so in Scottland. Has been already before the votum from today. Many people there believe the EU offers a good counterweight to the powers from the south parts fo the UK.

Right now the Pound is down to $1.38 US. I don't normally keep up with it but that sounds low.

Earlier today, it was under $1.33 so it's recovered somewhat...it touched $1.50 yesterday so there's lots of volatility right now.
